AI, wine, a Mazda, why we stayed — and on justice. Five endless threads, in four hours.
On how a small country might, for the first time, no longer be one step behind. On who should tell Moldova through the glass. On a single MX-60 that opened a two-hour conversation — Europe against Japan. On why, after all of that, we stayed in Moldova. And — toward the end, while televisions had gone quiet in other homes — on justice and corruption: the filter through which every other reform must flow. And a special guest from Sweden. More wine than beer. By eleven, home.
Five threads settled onto the table on their own, each with its own glass. Nobody brought them. Someone said "AI" and the silence broke. Then came the wine, the car, the question of why we stayed, and — at the end, while televisions had gone quiet in other homes — the conversation on justice. By closing time, none of them had been resolved — which, after eleven years of Mondays, is the textbook definition of an evening well spent.
Here is how opinions split.
§.01 · THREAD ONE
AI: ceiling or breakaway?
Two views faced off at the table. AG — if people stop putting their shoulder to progress and let themselves be replaced by AI, we hit our own ceiling as a civilization: nobody innovates anymore, we just leaf through what we have. RT — the opposite: only now can we really innovate, because the tools that were missing are finally within reach. The programmer no longer loses years to syntax, becomes an architect. The designer ships alone. The PM thinks strategically.
Opportunity, if we innovate▓▓▓▓▓5
Ceiling, if we don't▓▓2
Too early to tell▓1
„If we let AI do everything for us, we hit our own ceiling as a civilization. Someone has to keep innovating — otherwise we leaf through, we don't build."
— AG, glass set down
„I see it the other way around. The wheel was invented long ago, the particles that move the world forward have already been discovered. AI just helps us connect them — and finally we can innovate without losing years to syntax. As many philosophers, as many strategists as possible — and we'll be fine."
— RT, in reply
§.02 · THREAD TWO
Moldovan wine, told differently
What tastes do we need now, and who should tell Moldova through the glass? AS — the only one at the table with a trained nose (see why here) — pushed the conversation toward editorial courage: less French imitation, more identity.
Editorial courage▓▓▓▓▓5
Classic premium▓▓2
More variety▓1
„We have over five thousand years of vine. And a five-year strategy. That difference — you either sell it, or you hide it."
— AS, wine curator
§.03 · THREAD THREE
A Mazda MX-60, and a philosophy
Someone at the table was set on dropping over 30k on a Mazda MX-60. We suggested he keep looking — a BMW X3 plug-in hybrid, a Volvo, a Genesis. The conversation moved on its own: by the end, it was no longer about a car, but about how the makers think. Europeans vs. Japanese. Function against refinement. Opinion against precision.
Europe▓▓▓▓4
Japan▓▓▓3
Korea (Genesis)▓1
„You buy with the heart from the Europeans, with the mind from the Japanese. And neither one do you listen to all the way through."
— AG, to the one with Mazda on his mind
§.04 · THREAD FOUR
Why we stayed in Moldova
Many friends have left. A few have come back. We stayed — not because we had nowhere to go, but because we chose to. We believe in this country. We are here to stay. And we want to put our shoulder to how it's built from here on — not from a distance, but from inside.
We believe and we build▓▓▓▓▓5
Home is home, that's all▓▓2
We'll see▓1
„We're not leaving. Not because we can't — because we want to be here when it changes. And for it to change, someone has to stay."
— EC, without raising his glass
§.05 · THREAD FIVE
Justice and corruption — the filter everything flows through
On television, every evening, new headlines. Reforms, procurements, files, dismissals, announcements. But beyond the screens, the simple question: how much can we change when two pillars — justice and corruption — still don't work? Every reform flows through them. If the filter is cracked, what comes out on the other side is cracked too.
It all starts here▓▓▓▓▓▓6
Parallel reforms are possible▓1
Still waiting for the signs▓1
„We can pass a hundred reforms. If justice doesn't work, we're passing them against ourselves."
RT · AG · DS · JC · AS · EC · DL — and a guest from Sweden: he imports Moldovan wine, donates the profit to an NGO for children with autism in Moldova. Goes home with the idea of starting his own Boys' Night in his town in Sweden. On a Monday, obviously.
